How do I get my bass drum pedal to be less stiff?

Cobrun S asked:

My bass drum pedal is stiff compared to others I have played. I was wondering how to get mine not stiff yet to not touch the head when my foot is in rest position. Others that I have played just respond with almost a tap as mine actually needs a more powerful leg thrust.

  1. rhythmatist says:

Adjust the at rest position of the beater so that it is 45 degrees or a little more in relation to the drum head. Then reduce the spring tension until the beater starts to droop farther back by gravity. Then tighten it back to just where it started to droop. This is about the least amount of spring tension you can get without slack and rattle. Then you can adjust the at rest angle of the beater back to where you like it. rhythmatist

The tension is adjusted using the spring, but regardless of spring tension all brands of pedals respond differently. ddrum

there should be a little knob located under the spring that you can loosen Blah E
