I am an aspiring drummer interested in middle eastern music (i.e. the type that would be used in middle eastern belly dance) and am looking to purchase my first drum. Some have told me I should buy a doumbek and some have told me to buy a djembe. Any help would be great appreciated! Thanks :-)

When at bellydance haflas and festivals, I see many more doumbeks than djembes. Djembes are much taller (hence slightly less totable) and louder than doumbeks. I dug up a couple articles about both. magpie_complex

The djembe is not a Middle Eastern drum. It comes from West Africa, where it has a long tradition. Djembes are not used for belly dance. In African villages, they are played at occasions like funerals, weddings or to honor certain groups of people.

For Middle Eastern drumming, you’d better pick a doumbek. African-Music-Safari.com
