You can use tons of programs, Fruity loops, pro tools, Sonic.
Pro tools being the best, but fruity loops is good for starters Tony .

I would think a professional would be in a real studio rather than producing on his Dell workstation in the bedroom. If you are interested in what normal people use then get on Musicians Friend’s website, look at what they have and read the user reviews. You can also go to Harmony Central and search for even more reviews once you narrow your choice down. ddrum
