With hard water usage which drum should i opt for washing machine? steel or plastic?
prasna asked:
Hi,
Hi,
Im planning to buy a washing machine.. we use ground water that is hard. Can plastic drum also get coated with scales?
Should i consider this as a criteria for selecting the washing machine?
thanks.

Get a water check done for TDS(salinity) and iron content… Hard or soft water is a secondary problem.
If iron content is high, go for a steel drum, otherwise you may go for plastic ones… Debmalya

Either one will be fine. The tub isn’t likely to scale up because of the constant scrubbing and flushing of the wash action. You will have more trouble with intake screens, fill valves and and drain pumps if the water is really high in minerals. Hondu
I would go with the stainless steel tub but either will work ok. With well water the major problems will be fill valves clogging and quitting or faucets plugging up and not working. Plastic inner tubs are usually reserved for cheap machines. Most are either stainless steel or porcelain coated steel. Both carry at the minimum of a 10 yr manufacturers warranty so if they fail due to your use of well water they can be replaced cheaply. Get a extended warranty on your machine and don’t let it go. With well water you run a higher risk of machine failure just due to the chemicals and debris associated with untreated ground water. Good Idea is to get a water filter and put it where the water enters your home. This will also remove a lot of impurities that aren’t healthy for you. r w
The drum will not get coated with scale whatever it is made of as the detergent will keep it nice and clean. What will scale up is the heater element. There isn’t much you can do about this except install a water softener. BARRY B
Contrary to what you`ve been told here , the minerals in the water WILL coat the drum , and every part of the washer exposed to the water . Look at what the hard water is doing to your plumbing , dishwasher , coffeemaker etc ! It`ll do the exact same thing to your washer !
A water softener will help to a small extent , but you can`t totally eliminate the problem without investing in elaborate and VERY expensive equipment …………
Do yourself a favor and buy the very cheapest washer you can find . When the minerals eat it up beyond repair , just throw it out and buy a new one . Hermanetta
